In recent years, a
new class of medication- "Biologic Agents"- has emerged for the
treatment of autoimmune inflammatory diseases of the joints, muscle,
blood vessels, spine, skin and intestines.
The term "biologics" can be used to refer to a wide range of biological products in medicine. However, in most cases, the term "biologics" is used more restrictively for a class of medications (either approved or in development) that are produced by means of biological processes involving recombinant DNA technology.
These biologic
medications have proven to be effective treatments in slowing or even
stopping diseases. In Rheumatoid Arthritis, for example, many of these
medications can markedly reduce pain and swelling and reduce damage
usually expected with this a kind of arthritis.
These medications are
generally safe and tolerated well. Our
clinic's professionals provide infusion services to administer these
medications in a comfortable environment.
Current biologic
medications now approved for use in the rheumatic disease include:
- Remicade
- Enbrel
- Humira
- Rituxin*
- Abatacept*
*Rituxin and
Abatacept are not yet approved, but may be available as part of a
research study.
The diseases that we
can treat with these advanced therapies include:
- Joints:
Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis Medical Clinic
- Spine:
Anklyosing Spondylitis, Undifferentiated Spondyloarthopathies
- Skin: Psoriasis
